Karate School Chief Sentenced In Sex Abuse
November 11, 1987|By John Schmeltzer.
A karate school owner who held classes in Lombard and Naperville was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and violation of bail bond.
Christopher Hardy, 30, of Lombard, entered the negotiated plea after prosecutors determined they had improperly charged him with aggravated criminal sexual assault in connection with a child molestation charge, according to Du Page County Assistant State`s Atty. Joseph Birkett.
Tony Orr, 21, also of Lombard, who was an instructor at the karate school, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to six months in the Du Page County Jail and six months` probation. Orr also was placed on probation for violating his bail bond by Judge John J. Bowman of Du Page County Circuit Court.
Hardy, owner of the American Karate School, with locations at 24 W. St. Charles Rd., Lombard, and 616 W. 5th Ave., Naperville, was indicted earlier this year on three counts of aggravated sexual assault, five counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of solicitation. Orr was originally charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Hardy and Orr allegedly had sexual relations with two boys who were students at the Lombard school. All of the alleged incidents took place between July and November, 1986, according to Birkett.
The two men were charged with violating their bail bonds after they failed to appear in April for court dates. They were arrested in July.
Both men had dyed their hair light blond, and they had about 10 pieces of luggage packed with clothes and a portable television in their possession, when arrested on the bail violation charge, police said.

2 At Karate School Indicted In Abuse
March 27, 1987 | By Joseph Sjostrom.
Karate school owner Christopher Hardy, 29, and one of his instructors, Anthony Orr, 21, both of Lombard, have been indicted for allegedly having sexual contact with two boys, 10 and 12 years old, who were their students last year.
Hardy, owner of American Karate School, with locations at 24 W. St. Charles Rd., Lombard, and 616 W. 5th Ave., Naperville, also was ordered in a civil suit filed by the Illinois attorney general not to dispose of any of the school`s assets or records.
The civil suit was filed to make sure that the school`s assets would remain available to reimburse customers who paid in advance for karate instruction and now will not be able to take lessons, said Colleen McLaughlin, an assistant attorney general. She said Hardy closed the school after being arrested on March 6.
Du Page County Circuit Judge John W. Darrah ordered the assets frozen temporarily and set another hearing for next Friday for arguments on whether to make the order permanent.
The indictment, which was voted Wednesday by the county grand jury and filed Thursday with the court clerk, said Hardy`s wife, Shelly, participated in at least one incident of sexual contact with a karate school student. She has been cooperating, however, with prosecutors, and no charges have been filed against her, according to investigators.
Also on Thursday, Judge John J. Bowman set bond at $100,000 for Hardy and $30,000 for Orr. Both defendants are being held in Du Page County Jail in Wheaton.
Hardy, 2015 S. Finley Rd., Lombard, was released after the March 6 arrest after posting $6,500, the required 10 per cent of his $65,000 bail. He turned himself in at Du Page County Jail Monday when another charge of sexual abuse was filed against him based on new information from one of the victims.
Assistant State`s Atty. Joseph Birkett urged Judge Bowman to order Hardy held without bail.
The indictment charges Hardy with three counts of aggravated sexual assault, five counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of solicitation. Orr is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

2 Karate Teachers Seized In Child Sex-abuse Case
July 23, 1987|By Joseph Sjostrom.
The operator of two Du Page County karate schools and one of his instructors, sought for the last three months for failure to appear in court on child molestation charges, have been arrested by Wheaton police, it was learned Wednesday.
Chris Hardy, 29, and Tony Orr, 21, both of 2015 S. Finley Rd., Lombard, were arrested in downtown Wheaton Tuesday afternoon, according to Assistant Du Page County State`s Atty. Joseph E. Birkett. Hardy operated karate schools in Lombard and Naperville.
Both men had dyed their hair light blond and had a portable television set and about 10 pieces of luggage packed with clothes when arrested, Birkett said.
They told police that they had dyed their hair because they were ``on
(their) way to California,`` Birkett said. He said it was not known where they have been since Hardy failed to make a scheduled court appearance on April 9 and Orr failed to make an April 23 appearance.
Birkett said he received information Monday on where Hardy and Orr could be found but would not comment on the source. He said he provided Wheaton police with copies of photographs taken of both defendants at the time of their arrest last March, when they had dark hair.
Birkett said Hardy and Orr were arrested after they alighted from a taxicab with their luggage in front of a restaurant at Hale and Wesley Streets in downtown Wheaton.
Orr was arrested in front of the restaurant and Orr was arrested a block away, Birkett said.
Both were being held without bond Wednesday in Du Page County Jail and were scheduled to appear Thursday before Judge John J. Bowman in Wheaton for a bond hearing.
Hardy and Orr were indicted March 25 by a Du Page County grand jury on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for allegedly having sexual contact with two pre-teenage boys who were their students last year. Hardy also was charged with soliciting his wife, Shelly, to have sex with one of the boys.
Hardy was the owner of American Karate School, which had two locations:
24 W. St. Charles Rd., Lombard, and 616 W. 5th Ave., Naperville. Orr worked for him.
A warrant was issued for Hardy`s arrest when he failed to appear in court in April. A warrant was issued for Orr because he allegedly threatened retaliation against one of the boys for telling police about the alleged abuse.
Hardy allegedly wrote to a friend last April stating that ``by the time you read this I will be gone,`` Birkett said.
The Illinois attorney general`s office has filed suit seeking to confiscate any property belonging to Hardy in order to reimburse students who had prepaid for their karate lessons. But it was learned that Hardy`s only asset was an automobile, which his wife had sold for about $1,000, according to Assistant Atty. Gen. Colleen McLaughlin. McLaughlin said that she recovered the $1,000.
She said that other karate schools in the area are planning to give free lessons to Hardy`s students who already had paid him for lessons they never received.
