Police: convicted child rapist found working with kids in North Brookfield
NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass. - A convicted child rapist from Barre was found working with children at a martial arts studio in North Brookfield and police were never notified.
"We're talking children. We're talking classes that are going on and this is something that is very alarming to me," said Chief Mark Smith with North Brookfield police.
A resident, who's a retired police officer, recognized 60-year-old David Sanderson from the sex offender registry and alerted police.

Sanderson has been working with children at the karate studio Eternal River School on North Main Street for at least six months, said police. Sanderson is supposed to notify police in his town of residence, Barre, of any changes in employment. Police say that never happened.
FOX25 pulled courts records in Worcester superior court that indicate in 1991, Sanderson was convicted of raping multiple children. In 1991, Sanderson was convicted of raping his karate students. He pleaded guilty to six counts of child rape, among other charges. Police said at least one of those victims claimed to be one of his karate students.
Sanderson was sentenced to 20 years in Concord State Prison and classified as a level 3 sex offender and served his time. FOX25 has learned his parole ended in June of 2009, as did any restrictions on him, other than registering with the sex offender registry.
Though Sanderson re-registered as a sex offender in May, police said he told them he was unemployed.
"I'm not saying that the system is broke, but certainly this has happened. And, I think it is upon us to make sure that we look into it and see is there something better that we can be doing to make sure something like this doesn't happen again," said Smith.
Sanderson was arraigned last month and a condition of that arraignment is that he not have contact with anyone under the age of 16. He's expected back in court for a pre-trial hearing in June.
People who work in the area said they haven't seen anyone at the studio in a couple of weeks. FOX25 reached out to the owner of the karate studio, but they hung up when we called.

BARRE - Police say a level 3 sex offender convicted of raping his karate students in 1991 failed to tell them he has been working in a martial arts studio in North Brookfield.
David G. Sanderson, 60, of 1037 Williamsville Road, Barre, is due in court June 23 after being arraigned recently on a charge of failing to register as a sex offender. He was released on $2,000 bail, which was posted by his wife.
Police said Mr. Sanderson is required by law to notify them or the state’s Sex Offender Registry Board of changes in his work status but they were never told he was working, nor were they told he was employed in a setting much like the one from which he lured children to his home and on camping trips.
Mr. Sanderson in 1991 pleaded guilty in Worcester Superior Court to six counts of child rape, one count of unnatural rape, four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14, one count of indecent assault and battery and 11 counts of furnishing liquor to a person under 21. The victims were male and female and the offenses dated back to 1981. He was sentenced to 20 years in Concord State Prison and would have been eligible for parole after two years.
According to the state Sex Offender Registry Board’s website, he was classified as a level 3 offender; the most likely to re-offend. The site says he committed six counts of rape and abuse of a child, five counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 years old or older and one count of rape of a child with force.
In May, police were tipped off by a former police officer to the allegations that Mr. Sanderson was working at Eternal River School on North Main Street in North Brookfield, where he is known as “Grandmaster Doshi” and does not use his legal name, police wrote in a report.
In their investigation, police found photographs on social media and on the school’s website that they allege show Mr. Sanderson working at the school. In the photographs it appears he is trying to hide his identity by blocking views of his face, in one instance using a balloon.
Police also have photographs showing Mr. Sanderson taking down the “open” flag and locking the doors at the school, and Mr. Sanderson’s brown Chevrolet Impala was seen at the school, court records show.
Mr. Sanderson was scheduled to re-register as a sex offender in May, which Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos said he did, though he told police he is unemployed.
A man who answered the telephone at the Eternal River School on Wednesday and identified himself as the owner, sensei Daniel Larrabee, said he has never employed anyone named David Sanderson.
When asked if he employed a man known as Grandmaster Doshi, he said he would not answer any questions and hung up the telephone.
In court at his arraignment, Mr. Sanderson was ordered to have no contact with anyone younger than 16.
His next court appearance is for a pretrial conference.

Convicted Child Rapist Caught Working At North Brookfield Karate Studio For Kids

NORTH BROOKFIELD (CBS) – Police say a level 3 sex offender, convicted in 1991 of raping his karate students, failed to tell them he was now working at a martial arts studio in North Brookfield.
David Sanderson, 60, was known as “Grandmaster Doshi” at the Eternal River School on North Main Street which suddenly closed its doors on Thursday. Sanderson is registered as a sex offender in the nearby town of Barre where he lives.
But according to the Sex Offender Registry law he is required to notify police if anything changes in his status, including a job. “It’s completely on him to make sure he registers whenever he changes a job, vehicle, or anything,” said Smith.
If Barre police had known they would have notified North Brookfield. Barre Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos says he doesn’t know if it was a “misunderstanding” or a “blatant disregard of the law.” But he says a tip led them to investigate Sanderson and photos revealed he was working at the studio.
A level 3 sex offender is considered most likely to re-offend. In 1991 Sanderson pleaded guilty to numerous child rape charges and was sentenced to twenty years in prison. He was arrested May 25 for failing to register his job status and was released on $2,000.00 bail after his arraignment.
The landlord has now evicted the Eternal River School from the property which some parents believe is appropriate. “People fly through the cracks all the time, repeat offenses happen all the time,” said Frances Harrahy. “I hate to see anyone get hurt.”
“I just can’t believe it,” said Carmy Kozlowski, a grandmother of a karate student. “I’m still in shock over it. I just can’t believe it because he didn’t seem that type of a person at all.”
Shawn Whitney runs a martial arts studio two doors down, and has offered Sanderon’s now former students a month worth of free classes.
“It’s just a bad look on, on every martial arts teacher out there,” Whitney says. “You’re a mentor to them, more than anything.”
Chief Smith says he doesn’t know if Sanderson should have been working at the karate studio in the first place. “It’s one of those things I’m personally looking into,” he says. “I ask the question how could this happen and how can we prevent it from happening again.”
