Martial arts teacher gets three years
A former south Bossier martial arts instructor will serve three years in prison as part of a seven-year sentence for indecent behavior with a juvenile.
Bossier Parish Judge Bruce M. Bolin sentenced Richard S. Fatheree II, 40, of the 8200 block of Blanchard Furrh Road, Blanchard to serve three years of a seven-year sentence in a Louisiana Department of Corrections institution.
Once released, Fatheree will serve an additional three to five years probation, during which time he must register as a sex offender.
Fatheree first came into contact with authorities after Bossier Sheriff’s Office (BSO) investigators contacted him regarding his relationship with one of his students at Pak’s Karate on in the 5300 block of Barksdale Boulevard.
According to BSO reports, investigators contacted Fatheree Aug. 17, 2009 after a mother accused him of molesting her 15-year-old daughter. Fatheree sent the teen text messages professing his love to her and a letter stating he wanted to marry her.
While in BSO custody, investigators claim Fatheree admitted to kissing the teen, but that was the extent of their physical relationship. BSO investigators claim Fatheree and the teen had numerous kissing instances occurring between Apr. 1, 2009 through Jul. 29, 2009 at the Louisiana Boardwalk and Pak’s Karate where Fatheree taught the teen martial arts.
BSO deputies charged Fatheree with molestation of a juvenile and carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Three months after Fatheree’s arrest, he and Defense Attorney Spencer Hays waived formal arraignment entering a plea of not guilty. Hays attempted to halt the matter before going to a formal trial by filing two motions to quash the charges. However, Judge Bruce M. Bolin dismissed the motions calling them moot. Before going to trial, Fatheree agreed to a plea bargain.
By accepting the plea bargain, Fatheree changed his plea from not guilty to guilty in exchange for the District Attorney’s Office agreeing to reduce the molestation of a juvenile to indecent behavior with a juvenile as well as drop the carnal knowledge of a juvenile charge.
Final sentencing remained contingent on the results of a pre-sentence investigation that concluded Tuesday.
According to Louisiana state law anyone convicted of indecent behavior with a juvenile could face between two to 25 years in prison. Despite objection from Defense Attorney Hays, Judge Bolin sentence Fatheree to seven years hard labor with all but three suspended.
