Mebane man charged with indecent liberties
By Times-News
Published: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 22:07 PM.
A volunteer instructor at a Burlington martial arts studio made a court appearance Monday on charges of indecent liberties with a child.
Burlington police charged Erik Lance Cates, 45, of Hoover Road, Mebane, on Friday with four counts of indecent liberties with a child. According to warrants, Cates is accused of the incidents on June 9 and June 30 with a child younger than 16. His bond was set at $25,000.
Cates is listed as unemployed on arrest warrants but was a volunteer instructor at Piedmont Martial Arts, on Alamance Road in Burlington, when the incidents are alleged to have occurred, said Ron Cooley, a Hillsborough attorney who represents the martial arts studio.
Cates agreed to stop leading classes there when Burlington police began an investigation into the allegations last summer, Cooley said.
Attempts to reach Piedmont Martial Arts owner Erica Smith on Monday and Tuesday were not successful. Cooley told the Times-News that Smith had referred calls to him. Cooley said he is also a volunteer at the studio.
According to its website, the studio offers after school programs as well as classes for adults and children.
