Karate teacher admits to sexually assaulting girls
By Julie Manganis
SALEM — A Haverhill karate instructor pleaded guilty yesterday to sexually assaulting two former students at the Georgetown karate school where he once taught.
Leonard Hileman, 30, was sentenced to 21/2 to four years in state prison during a hearing in Salem Superior Court, where a judge called his crimes "a horrific violation of trust."
Hileman taught karate at Robicheau's Premier Martial Arts on West Main Street for several years. Two girls who attended the school during that time came forward in 2006 to disclose that Hileman had started "coming on" to them, one when she was 14 and the other when she was 15.
One girl eventually engaged in sexual intercourse with him; the other told investigators that Hileman had fondled her.
Both girls described how Hileman would organize sleepovers at the school, where they were asked to help supervise younger girls. The girls submitted written victim-impact statements to Judge David Lowy. Prosecutor Jessica Connors read those statements to the judge.
Both girls described lasting effects of the abuse, including difficulty trusting others. One girl has been unable to start college as a result of the emotional trauma.
Connors sought a slightly longer term of three to five years. She called Hileman "a wolf in sheep's clothing."
Hileman's attorney, Tom Gleason, said his client was apologetic and remorseful.
"This is all his fault," Gleason told the judge.
Lowy said he agreed, reminding the girls that they bear no responsibility. The crimes are "wholly and completely Mr. Hileman's fault," said the judge.
Hileman pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child and four counts of indecent assault and battery. He will serve his prison term on one of the rape counts and two of the assault counts, followed by five years of probation on the other rape count and two other assault counts. That means that if he violates any conditions of his five years of probation, he could face up to a life sentence.
Among those conditions are that he wear a GPS bracelet, register as a sex offender, have no contact with the victims and not have a job where he works with children under 16.
Hileman, who had been free on bail, winced as a court officer put handcuffs on him. His pregnant fiancée, seated in the gallery, wept.

Former Georgetown Karate Instructor Pleads Guilty To Rape Of A Child
Former Georgetown karate instructor Leonard Hileman, 29, of Haverhill, pleaded guilty today in Salem Superior Court to two counts of rape of a child, and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child over the age of 14.
Judge David Lowy sentenced Hileman to 2 - 4 years in state prison on one charge of rape of a child, and two of the indecent assault and battery charges. Those sentences will run concurrently. Hileman was sentenced to five years probation, from and after the committed portion of his sentence, on the remaining charges.
Judge Lowy ordered Hileman to register as a sex offender and undergo sex offender counseling. He will be monitored during his probation by a GPS tracking device. He must also stay away from the victims and their families, and must be employed or actively be seeking employment. He cannot have any type of job that brings him in contact with children under the age of 16.
Essex Assistant District Attorney Jessica P. Connors told the Court that had the case gone to trial, the Commonwealth would have proved that Hileman, while a karate instructor at Robicheau’s Karate School in Georgetown from 2003 – 2006, sexually assaulted two of his female students. The assaults on the victims, one of whom was 15 and the other 14 when the crimes occurred, took place at the school during sleepovers, which were organized by the defendant.
The sexual assaults were reported to Georgetown Police on September 11, 2006. Following a joint investigation by Georgetown Police and State Police assigned to the Office of Essex District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett, Hileman was arrested on October 4, 2006.
Attorney Tom Gleason represented the defendant during his change of plea.

Martial arts instructor held on child rape charges
By Jim Patten
GEORGETOWN - Martial arts instructor Leonard Hileman had an affair with the mother of one of his students and molested the woman's 14-year-old daughter, police said.
Hileman also allegedly molested another student at the martial arts school that began when she was 15 and continued until she was 17, according to police reports.
The allegations got him fired from his job at Robicheau's Premier Martial Arts at 9 W. Main St. and he was arrested Tuesday night on charges stemming from the incidents.
Hileman, 28, of 172 Presidential Drive, Haverhill, was charged with five counts of indecent assault and battery on a child 14 or over, two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and two counts of rape of a child under 16.
According to police reports, the husband and father of the woman and 14-year-old daughter spoke to police on Sept. 11 and told them about the affair and possible inappropriate behavior and comments between Hileman and his daughter, who was a student and assistant to Hileman. He said that he had brought it to the attention of the owner of the martial arts school.
Brian Robicheau, owner of the school, told police he learned of the allegations on Aug. 18 when the girl's father told him Hileman had been inappropriately text-messaging and instant-messaging his daughter.
Robicheau told police he confronted Hileman, who denied the allegations.
Police said when Robicheau told Hileman the girl's father had copies of all of the text messages and asked if there was anything in those messages that was going to look bad for him, Hileman replied that it all depended on how the messages were interpreted.
It was then that Robicheau fired Hileman, police said.
Robicheau told police he sent a letter to the parents of all of his students explaining why Hileman had been fired and noted that this was Hileman's second warning for unprofessional behavior.
Some of the incidents occurred during sleepovers at the martial arts school and in one case when Hileman used a ruse to get the 14-year-old girl to baby-sit his young son, saying his girlfriend was away and he and a friend were going out, according to police reports.
But when she arrived at Hileman's home, he told her the friend had canceled and that he would stay home and watch movies with her, the reports said.
During that evening, Hileman is alleged to have put his arm around the girl and began kissing her on the head. When the girl told him she wanted to go home, he stopped but then tried to hug her, according to police reports.
She told police that on other occasions, Hileman would kiss her and fondle her breasts and buttocks.
The 17-year-old victim told police Hileman began coming on to her when she was 15 and that they had sex on the floor in the office at the school after it closed.
The victim told investigators that Hileman wore a condom during the encounters.
She said that she baby-sat a few times for Hileman's son beginning when she was 15 and that he would try to kiss her as he drove her home. She told police Hileman was always coming on to her.
During his arraignment yesterday in Haverhill District Court, Judge Stephen Abany ordered Hileman held without bail pending a hearing to determine whether he poses a danger to the community and should be held in jail pending his trial.
The hearing was scheduled for Oct. 11.
Defense attorney Scott Gleason refused to comment on the case after the arraignment.
