More charges against karate instructor
RIVERHEAD - A Long Island karate instructor pleaded not guilty today to 27 new charges in a second indictment accusing him of sodomy, disseminating indecent material to minors, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said two more victims have come forward alleging multiple sexual encounters with James Bonfiglio, 37, and their information resulted in his arrest on Friday, March 28. At the time of his arrest Friday, Bonfiglio was free on $500,000 bond, an amount he posted following his arraignment February 25 on a 43-count indictment.
The pair of indictments involve alleged sex crimes against a total of 12 male victims under the age of 17, Spota said.
Following his first arrest last October, detectives seized hidden cameras from Bonfiglio’s apartment and from his karate studio, Excel Karate Academy in Ronkonkoma. Bonfiglio’s computer was also confiscated during the execution of a search warrant, Spota said.
The defendant’s cumulative bail and bond from both indictments is now $750,000 cash, or $1.5 million bond.
