A 13-year-old boy's testimony that his karate teacher sexually abused him was enough to convict a sex offender of five first-degree felonies.
A 3rd District jury of five women and three men deliberated almost four hours Tuesday before convicting Dean Eddie Williams on three counts of sodomy of a child and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The boy, 12 at the time of the abuse, testified he went to Williams' home on three occasions between spring and late November 1998 for karate lessons. Instead of teaching karate, the boy said Williams performed sex acts on him and made him perform sex acts on Williams. Williams also showed the boy a pornographic movie, had him sniff a "white powder" and told the boy he'd pay him to bring girls to the house, the boy said.
Williams denied ever molesting the boy.
"Dean did not do it," Williams' defense attorney John O'Connell Jr. said during closing arguments. "He did not do anything inappropriate with this boy."
O'Connell said the boy's accounts of being molested were coached by police and prosecutors and reminded jurors that the boy's mother did not report the abuse even after her son told her what had happened.
Allegations against Williams didn't come out until March 1999 when prosecutor Susan Hunt was preparing the boy to testify in another sexual abuse case.
"We were just talking about the (other) case and he just blurted it out," Hunt said.
With no physical evidence, jurors where left to weigh Williams' word against the boy's testimony.
"I think the child was the case," Hunt said. "I think he was very credible."
During his closing arguments, O'Connell pointed out two discrepancies in the boy's testimony. The boy said he went to Williams' home three times for karate lessons, but the boy's mother said it was 10 times.
The boy also said Williams was wearing underwear during each molestation, but Williams' wife testified her husband never wore underwear.
Williams, 39, was convicted of sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony, in March 1998, and is also awaiting a trial later this month on sodomy on a child, a first-degree felony; sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony; and two counts of deal in harmful material to a minor, a third-degree felony.
A plea deal is possible in that case.
Williams faces a maximum of 55 years to life in prison when he is sentenced April 14 by Judge Leslie Lewis.
