BARTOW – A Lake Wales taekwondo instructor has been convicted of having sex with a 16-year-old female student in the martial arts program.
Chase Woolman, 27, faces up to life imprisonment after a jury found him guilty Wednesday of sexual battery and lewd molestation by a custodial authority, according to court records.
Woolman, a lead instructor at Tae Kwon Do School of Excellence at 65 W. Central Ave. in Lake Wales, was arrested in September 2015 on allegations he coerced the girl into touching him inappropriately, performing oral sex on him and having sex with him. She said the encounters began in 2010, when she and other students attended a taekwondo seminar.
She told detectives with the Lake Wales Police Department that the encounters escalated in 2012, when Woolman had sex with her in the back seat of his truck, according to court records. She said the encounters took place several times, usually in his truck, through October 2013, when she said she ended the relationship after Woolman’s wife learned about the allegations.
Under law enforcement supervision, the girl called Woolman in September 2015 and he acknowledged having sex with her. He said he worried every day that the police were going to show up and take him to jail, according to court records. She told him during the call that she believed he was in a leadership role and she felt she could trust him, and he apologized for not keeping her trust.
The jury convicted Woolman of sexual battery on a child between 12 and 18 by a custodial adult, which expands the potential punishment to life imprisonment.
Circuit Judge Wayne Durden scheduled sentencing for Dec. 14.

A Tae Kwon Do instructor in Lake Wales has been arrested after police say he forced a young female student to have sex with him over the course of three years.
Chase Woolman, 26, was booked into Polk County Jail on charges of sexual battery and lewd molestation, according to the Lake Wales Police Department.
Police said Woolman made the first advances on the student when she was between 13 and 15 years old.
“It is definitely very shocking that happened,” said Josie Blum, 13.
Her mother gave her permission to talk to ABC Action News about the allegations against her teacher.
“It is a big surprise because a lot of people look up to him and admire him and it is sad to hear that,” she said.
Members of the Tae Kwon Do School of excellence would not speak to ABC Action News. They left a note on their door that read in part, “We are deeply saddened by the accusations that have been brought against Master Chase.
“The Tae Kwon Do School of Excellence prides itself on nearly 20 years of serving the Lake Wales community with distinction…
“Pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, Master Chase has been placed on a mandatory leave of absence.”
An investigation into the allegations against Woolman began Tuesday after a student of the Tae Kwon Do School of Excellence met with Lake Wales police investigators.
According to police, she told them Woolman began making sexual advances toward her in 2010 during a school trip and he continued after they returned home.
The girl told investigators Woolman made her have sex with him in his truck and inside the Tae Kwon Do school, continuing until 2013, Lake Wales police said.
Investigators heard Woolman confirm he had sex with the girl during a conversation between the two, police said.
Woolman has a wife and small children.
Members of the school would not comment on Woodman’s personal life, but wrote in their letter, “As you can imagine, his wife and all members of the Woodman family are under a great deal of duress. We humbly request that members of the media and the community respect their privacy and join us in helping protect his young children from any undue harm.”
