SCHENECTADY — A Colonie man, who once taught at a tae kwon do martial arts school in Duanesburg, was sentenced to seven years behind bars for raping a teenage girl at her Rotterdam home four years ago.
The penalty, meted out Friday in Schenectady County Court to Christopher Gallup, 28, will run concurrently with the prison time he is already serving for possessing child porn in Albany County, according to attorneys involved in the case.
Visiting Schenectady County Judge Polly Hoye also issued a 10-year stay-away order of protection and the defendant will have to register as a sex offender.
In November, Gallup pleaded guilty to second-degree rape as part of a negotiated plea.
During her victim-impact statement, the teen said the crime strengthened her resolve to succeed.
"All the pain you caused me is a life lesson," said the girl, who described her attacker as a bad person. "I am 10 times stronger and better than I was before."
When it was his turn to speak, Gallup apologized for his criminal behavior and said, "I make no excuses."
But Assistant District Attorney Christina Tremante-Pelham said Friday that Gallup appeared to spend most of his time in the pre-sentence report blaming the victim for the crime. She had just turned 13 years old in January 2009 when Gallup sexually assaulted her, said the prosecutor.
"We are talking about a man who was in a position of trust and authority over a girl," Tremante-Pelham said.
Gallup's attorney, Joseph McCoy, said his client would be getting counseling. He asked Hoye to sentence Gallup to the terms of the negotiated plea deal.
In May, Gallup was arrested and police seized several computers and media storage devices with child pornography after raiding his Sand Creek Road apartment.
Police said the investigation began when troopers received a tip about Gallup posting images on the Internet.
At the time, he told police he worked in the cafe at Barnes & Noble in Colonie.
The victim came forward after Colonie police arrested Gallup.
Gallup taught tae kwon do in several locations over the last few years.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Albany martial arts instructor has been charged with raping a young teen student.
State and town of Rotterdam police say Friday that 27-year-old Christopher Gallup of Albany raped the 13-year-old girl at a home in Rotterdam and a tae kwon do school in Duanesburg in 2009.
Troopers say the girl came forward after Gallup was arrested last week on child pornography charges in Colonie, another Albany-area town.
They asked anyone with information about Gallup to contact authorities.
Gallup was arraigned Thursday on two counts of second-degree rape and jailed on $40,000 bail. He didn't enter a plea. His lawyer wasn't available for comment Friday afternoon.
Police are asking anyone with information about Gallup to give them a call.
