PLAINVIEW — Supporters of the victim in a child abuse case have mixed feelings about the sentence the offender received Friday morning.
Jesus “Jesse” Camargo Jr. pleaded guilty in Judge Kregg Hukill’s 242nd District Court to injury to a child and misdemeanor assault. According to terms of a pre-determined plea agreement, he’ll spend a year in the county jail for assault and serve five years’ deferred adjudication for injury to a child.
Camargo, 41, was initially charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact, typically prosecuted as a second-degree felony. He was arrested in February 2015 on a charge connected to inappropriately touching a student at his martial arts and gymnastics studio in downtown Plainview.
The injury to a child conviction is a state jail felony. The deferred adjudication means if he successfully completes five years of probation, the conviction will not appear on his record. Violating it, on the other hand, could send him to a state jail for up to two years.
Some supporters of the victim are upset Camargo will not be required to register as a sex offender.
“It’s not good,” Sonya Jennings said.
Jennings, a family friend of the victim and former friend of Camargo, shook her head while describing her frustration: “They give people that use drugs harder sentences than sex offenders. People that hurt our kids don’t get nothin’. This is a slap on the wrist.”
District Attorney Wally Hatch said the victim and her family approved the plea agreement.
Dan Hurley, Camargo’s attorney, described the victim and her family as “really fine people” who handled the case with Christian values and integrity.
His client is remorseful, he added: “Jesse is terribly sorry for his conduct that led up to this, and I think he’ll spend the rest of his life trying to prove to people that he’s not an evil person.”
Camargo appeared in court freshly shaven and wearing a black, button-down shirt. He responded to the judge’s questions with polite and concise “that’s correct” and “yes, your honor” answers.
Other terms of the plea agreement include sex offender treatment such as counseling, 320 hours of community service and a variety of court costs and probation fees. He is not allowed to communicate with the victim or her family or visit places such as schools or playgrounds.

A Plainview martial arts and gymnastics teacher has pleaded guilty to a charge of injury to a child and misdemeanor assault. On Friday, Jesus "Jesse" Camargo Jr., 41, submitted a guilty plea to Judge Kregg Hukill's 242nd District Court. Camargo was originally charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact. He was arrested in February 2015 after a student told authorities Camargo inappropriately touched her in his martial arts studio in downtown Plainview.
Hale County District Attorney Wally Hatch said the injury to a child charge was a state jail felony and Camargo received five years deferred adjudication probation. In brief, Camargo will serve probation for five years and if he does not violate probation terms the charge will be dropped from his record. Camargo also will have to pay a $3,000 fine and court costs. He does not have to register as a sex offender, but will face the extra monitoring and counseling that other sex offenders undergo. Camargo will also have to perform 320 hours of community service.
In addition, he is not allowed to communicate with the victim or her family or visit places such as schools or playgrounds. Hatch said it is expected that Camargo will plead guilty Monday before Hale County Judge Bill Coleman for a Class A Misdemeanor Assault and will serve one year in jail with a day-for-day sentence. "The victim and her family approved the plea deal," Hatch said. "They were involved in the plea negotiations throughout the process, and agreed with the outcome."

PLAINVIEW — The owner and instructor of a Plainview gymnastics and martial arts studio was arrested Thursday on an accusation he inappropriately touched an underage student.
Jesus “Jesse” Camargo Jr., 40, is charged with indecency with a child.
Camargo owns and operates Private Self-Defense Academy Martial Arts and Gifted and Talented Gymnastics, 704 E. Broadway St.
Plainview police investigated a claim from a female student that he touched her inappropriately both at the studio and outside the facility when she was 16, Cpt. Manuel Balderas said. The child told her parents, who filed a report, he said.
Officers obtained a warrant for Camargo’s arrest, which they served at his residence, Balderas said.
Camargo was booked into the Hale County Jail on Thursday and released that day on a $20,000 bond.
Indecency with a child is a second-degree felony. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Calls to the martial arts and gymnastics studio Monday morning went unanswered.
