Johnson, 41, of Boca Raton, met the sixth-grader in 2010 at a local martial arts studio where they took classes, prosecutors said.
Johnson admitted befriending the girl and telling her he could help get her poetry published after he found her notebook at the dojo.
The construction worker and former karate instructor obtained permission from the girl's mother to give the girl his phone number, claiming he wanted to mentor her with her martial arts and creative writing.
The girl said he told her she had an "old soul" and that he didn't date women his own age "because they were emotionally damaged."
But Johnson soon turned their conversations to questions about the girl's sexual experiences and he started sending her sexually explicit texts, according to court records.
Eventually, the girl's phone was confiscated by her teacher and it was turned over to Davie police. Investigators found texts that suggested the two had exchanged inappropriate photos of the girl that Johnson said were deleted.
"It killed me to lose your pics ... I spend so much time looking at them," Johnson wrote in one message with a "sad face" emoticon.
BSO Sgt. Giuseppe Weller supervises ICAC South Florida, a special unit that investigates internet crimes against children, talks about protecting your children against online predators.
He also wrote to tell her how she could be "like a good whore."
The girl later told investigators that Johnson had sex with her in a locked restroom in the locked karate studio in February 2011, when she was 12.
Johnson told an adult male friend that he needed to get something off his chest and confided that he was "in a relationship" with the girl. He said they devised a way of communicating privately without her parents' knowledge.
The friend reported the conversation to police and law enforcement interviewed the girl. She confirmed they texted frequently and spoke by phone a few times a week.
The girl's mother got a court order prohibiting Johnson from communicating with the girl when she found out they were having inappropriate contact, including kissing.
But Johnson admitted he repeatedly violated the court injunction and found other ways to contact the girl, including using her friends' phones.
At one point, he told police that she was a "troubled youth" he was mentoring.
Privately, he told the girl that he knew what he was doing was wrong and it could send him to jail but he "could not choose who he loved."

A Florida martial arts instructor has been arrested after luring a 12-year-old student into a sexual relationship; texting her how she could be “like a good whore.”
Alexander Johnson, 40, of Boca Raton, is facing federal charges that he enticed or coerced the girl into sexual activity in Broward and Palm Beach counties, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Johnson initially faced state charges in Broward but the case has since been transferred to federal court.
The investigation initially began in 2012 after a friend of Johnson’s told police that he had confided that he was having sex with an underage girl.
The girl told investigators that Johnson befriended her in 2011 when he was her martial arts instructor in Boca Raton, after reading poems in her notebook and telling her he could help her get them published. They began texting and talking frequently, with the girl describing their relationship as “awkward and weird.”
In July 2012 the girl’s mother obtained a restraining order that barred Johnson from contacting the girl.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jodi Anton, Johnson violated the court order within two months, texting back and forth with the girl “every day for several months” on cellphones that were difficult to trace.
After the a teacher confiscated a phone the girl was using, investigators found text messages on the phone that Johnson sent in November 2012 telling her “he could not live without her” and providing instructions on how to avoid detection. Investigators said that Johnson also texted her that he had deleted naked photographs of her.
“It killed me to lose your pics … I spend so much time looking at them,” Johnson wrote, with a ‘sad face’ emoticon. “when THINGS CALM DOWN U CAN SEND MORE.”
The girl eventually told investigators that Johnson had sex with her in a locked restroom inside the locked karate studio in February 2011, when she was 12.
Johnson’s lawyer, Alex Arreaza, said he doesn’t believe that prosecutors have evidence to prove the allegations, stating, “When a child is allegedly the victim, emotion is going to be high … the question is going to be whether he broke the law.”

A former South Florida martial arts instructor lured his 12-year-old student into a sexual relationship — claiming he could help get her poetry published and promising to marry her when she turned 18, prosecutors said Thursday.
Alexander Johnson, 40, of Boca Raton, is facing federal charges that he enticed or coerced the girl into sexual activity in Broward and Palm Beach counties. FBI agents said he also talked her into sending him naked photos and "sexting" with him.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Alicia Valle ruled Thursday that Johnson is a danger to the community and will remain locked up pending trial.
Johnson's lawyer, Alex Arreaza, said he doesn't believe that prosecutors have evidence to prove the allegations. Johnson initially faced state charges in Broward but the case was transferred to federal court.

Johnson and the girl sent each other naked photos of themselves and agents found explicit texts, including one Johnson wrote telling her how she could be "like a good whore."
