Ex-deputy Gets 6-year Sentence
October 01, 1999|By THOMAS D. WILLIAMS; Courant Staff Writer
HARTFORD — A former Hartford special deputy sheriff and Barry Square martial-arts instructor received six years in prison Thursday for sexually molesting two young female students.
Hartford Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford sentenced David Negron, 45, of 219 Barker St., Hartford, to 10 years in prison, suspended after serving six years, and 25 years' probation. Negron pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
The convictions resulted from an investigation that began in May 1997 after Hartford police detectives received complaints from two girls, aged 11 and 12, alleging sexual misconduct by their martial-arts instructor. Two months later, after searching Negron's martial-arts studio, The School of Self Defense at 8 Mountford St., city police arrested him.
Negron, who has a black belt, taught adults and children as young as 3 in martial arts. A special deputy sheriff in Hartford under the former Sheriff Alfred Rioux for several years, Negron ran the school for three or four years.
The mother of one of the students told police that her daughter told her in May 1997 that she no longer wanted to attend Negron's school because he was sexually abusing her. The girl told police Negron used to take her into the school's office and perform sexual acts with her. When she immediately protested the advances, she said, Negron became forceful and threatened to prevent her from advancing in the martial-arts school.
Police said Negron later told them the girl was making false accusations about him because he terminated her from the karate program at the school.
The other victim of Negron's advances was a 12-year-old girl who said Negron began sexually abusing her in the school's office about two months after she joined his classes in May 1996. She quit the classes a year later because of the abuse, police said.

Karate Teacher Denies Sexual Abuse Of Teen
Hartford Instructor Arraigned Tuesday
August 13, 1997|By MAXINE BERNSTEIN; Courant Staff Writer
A police affidavit alleges that a martial arts instructor sexually abused a teenage student for four months, locking her in his office and telling her she would never receive a red or black belt if she resisted his advances.
David Negron, 43, who owns and runs The School of Self-Defense on Mountford Street, dismisses the allegations and says the girl is just trying to ruin him because he kicked her out of his program.
Hartford police said the girl's mother pulled her daughter out of the program in May once she heard of the alleged sexual abuse and had her report it to police.
Negron was arraigned in Hartford Superior Court Tuesday, following his arrest last month on two counts of first-degree sexual assault and multiple counts of other sexual misconduct charges stemming from the girl's complaint. He was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court Sept. 2.
Meanwhile, Hartford detectives are continuing to investigate similar complaints from other students. And the city of Hartford has put on hold a $3,500 grant that the council had approved in the spring to help subsidize Negron's martial arts school.
``It was approved prior to any knowledge that we had of any alleged wrongdoing. The money has not been released because of the pending outcome of the arrest,'' said Calixto Torres, assistant director of the city's Department of Human Services. Last year, Negron's school received a $2,000 grant from the city's general fund, Torres said.
According to the police affidavit, the girl began taking classes at the school in January. Abuse allegedly occurred two nights a week, from February to May, when the student was 12 years old.
During a videotaped interview, the girl told police that Negron would call her into his office and sometimes force her to lie on the office floor and unbutton her jeans, and he'd sexually molest her. On other occassions, she said, he forced her to perform oral sex on him.
She said she did not report the abuse earlier because she loved karate and because Negron, who she said demanded to be called ``Master D'' by his pupils, promised to help her become proficient in the martial art, the affidavit says.
Prior to his arrest, Negron, accompanied by a lawyer, contacted Hartford detectives investigating the girl's complaint and voluntarily visited the police station to respond to the allegations.
Negron said the girl was lying, contending that she was sour that he had kicked her out of the program. But the girl's mother said her daughter told her in May that she no longer wanted to attend the class because the instructor was ``making her do sexual things that she didn't like,'' the affidavit says.
Negron, who has a black belt and is a former Hartford County deputy sheriff, has owned and run The School of Self Defense for three or four years. He teaches adults and children martial arts at the school, which is located in a red-brick factory building at 8 Mountford St.

Martial Arts Instructor Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Student
July 30, 1997 | By MAXINE BERNSTEIN; Courant Staff Writer
The owner of a martial arts school in Hartford's Barry Square neighborhood was charged Tuesday with sexually molesting a young female student.
David Negron, 43, was arrested at his Hartford home Tuesday afternoon on a warrant.
He was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, four counts of other sexual offenses and risk of injury to a minor.
The arrest stems from an investigation that began in May after Hartford police detectives received complaints from two girls, aged 11 and 12, alleging sexual misconduct by their martial arts instructor.
The warrant reflects allegations by one of the students, but Hartford detectives are continuing to investigate and expect additional charges.
Two weeks ago, police obtained a warrant to search Negron's School of Self Defense, a business that police said Negron owns and runs in a red-brick factory building at 8 Mountford St.
Negron, who has a black belt, teaches adults and children as young as 3 in martial arts. A deputy sheriff in Hartforduntil 2 1/2 years ago, Negron has run the school for three or four years.
``I don't buy it,'' said Joe Lapira, 28, one of Negron's students, who was at the school Tuesday afternoon. Another instructor was leading classes. ``He treats everybody equally. I can't believe it. Everybody here is shocked.''
Negron, of 219 Barker St., was booked about 4:30 p.m. and released a short time later after posting $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Hartford Superior Court on Aug. 12.
