Karate instructor pleads no contest to molestation
September 09, 2008, 12:00 AM The Associated Press
A Daly City karate teacher facing 47 felony charges of molestation against former students over the course of a year pleaded no contest to 17 felonies in return for 39 years and eight months in prison.
Roger Reyes Palmiano, 53, previously pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14, sending a minor harmful material meant to create arousal, oral copulation with a minor under 16 and lewd acts of a child under 15 by a person more than 10 years older.
On Monday, the day trial was set to begin, Palmiano changed his plea. Palmiano is also required to register as a sex offender.
The alleged victims all attended Palmiano’s martial arts school, Karate Do USA, on Mission Street in Daly City. The first two came forward to report Palmiano molested them between January 2005 and 2006.
After his arrest, the publicity spurred the other three women to come forward. They told authorities they were molested during the same time frame while ages 9, 15 and 29, respectively.
Palmiano remains in custody in lieu of $2.3 million bail. His returns to court Oct. 29 for sentencing.
