Karate Teacher Gets 10 Years For Sex Abuse
February 18, 1993|By Robert Enstad.
A karate instructor admitted Wednesday in Lake County court that he sexually fondled four male students at his Round Lake Park karate school and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
It was the second sentence in eight years for Thomas M. Long, 41, who headed the Eagle Karate School of Martial Arts in Round Lake Park.
Wednesday's sentence was part of a plea agreement reached between Assistant State's Attorneys George Strickland and Christine Moe and Michael Fulton, the attorney for Long. It was approved by Lake County Circuit Judge Henry Tonigan.
"We have discussed this plea with the families of the victims," Strickland said. "We believe that this is in the best interest of the families."
Following Long's plea of guilty to four counts of criminal sexual abuse, Moe read into the court record a brief synopsis of the incidents.
The incidents involved four boys ages 11 through 13 who were karate students at the Eagle school in 1991. In one incident, a boy said he was fondled while cutting Long's hair at the school. In another incident, Moe told Tonigan, Long threatened to tell the parents of an 11-year-old boy that he was a homosexual if he did not put on a dress.
After the boy put on the dress, she said, he was sexually fondled by Long. Three of the incidents occurred at the school and the fourth at the Round Lake Park home of Long, the prosecutor said.
In 1985, Long was placed on 3 years' probation on a sexual abuse charge in west suburban Brookfield. Because of that conviction, Tonigan said, Long was eligible for an extended term in prison on the new charges in Lake County.
A conviction for criminal sexual abuse normally carries a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison.
Wednesday's guilty pleas followed a long effort by Long to avoid trial. He spent eight months in the Elgin Mental Health Center in 1992 after he was found unfit to stand trial in the Round Lake Park incidents.
Fulton said that the Elgin center sent Long a bill of $40,000 for his treatment at the facility.
Fulton said he was asking that the county pay for Long's treatment at Elgin, which was ordered by the court. Tonigan set a hearing on the matter for Feb. 25.
Strickland said he does not know if the state's attorney's office will oppose having taxpayers pay the $40,000 bill.
Tonigan ordered Long to serve four concurrent sentences of 10 years each for the four offenses.

Karate Teacher Facing New Child Sex Charges
July 04, 1991|By Robert Enstad.
The owner of a Round Lake karate school was indicted Wednesday on 12 counts of criminal sexual abuse in connection with the alleged fondling of six minors, some of whom were his pupils.
Thomas M. Long Sr., 39, of Round Lake Park, who claims to be a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, must surrender on the charges in Lake County Circuit Court on Tuesday and face a new bond of $200,000.
Long has been free on a $40,000 bond since his arrest June 19 in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of two 13-year-old youths. But Wednesday, a Lake County grand jury meeting in Waukegan indicted him for allegedly abusing six minors, including the 13-year-olds.
His bond was later increased by Circuit Judge John R. Goshgarian at the request of Jeffrey Pavletic, an assistant state`s attorney.
``All these alleged victims were either students at the karate school or friends of Long`s son,`` Pavletic said.
Long operates the Eagle Karate School of Martial Arts at 452 N. Cedar Lake Rd., Round Lake. In his promotional brochure for the school, Long claims that he received nine Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for combat duty in Vietnam.
State`s Atty. Michael J. Waller said his office is trying to determine if Long`s claims are true.
Pavletic said additional charges were brought against Long because several other alleged victims came forward after hearing news accounts of Long`s arrest last month.
``The majority of these (alleged) acts occurred in April and May of this year,`` the prosecutor said. ``One victim claims he was abused early in 1989. There were a number of incidents.``
Court records show that Long was convicted in south suburban Burbank in 1977 on a sex offense and in 1983 in west suburban Brookfield for child abuse. Pavletic said Long was placed on probation for 3 years in the child abuse case. Records did not show his sentence in the 1977 case.
One of the alleged victims named in Wednesday`s indictment was a 6-year-old girl. The others were identified as boys age 10 to 13.
Pavletic said the incidents allegedly occurred in Long`s home or in his karate school.
If convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Long could face up to 14 years in prison. He will be arraigned Tuesday before Circuit Judge Henry Tonigan in Waukegan.
