A former Blaine karate teacher who was accused of sending sexually explicit messages to one of his students pleaded guilty to the charge last week.
Ali Islam Morey pleaded guilty Sept. 15 in Anoka County District Court to two counts of engaging in electronic communication with a child relating to sexual conduct, according to the Anoka County attorney's office.
Criminal charges were filed against Morey in February after the 21-year-old sent sexually charged messages to one of his female students on Facebook.
He also sent a picture of his genitalia, according to the criminal complaint.
The girl was 12 years old.
At the time, Morey was an instructor at Professional Karate Studios in Blaine. He no longer works there.
After the initial charge was filed, three 15-year-old female students made similar allegations against Morey.
His attorney, Rory Patrick Durkin, said after the hearing that Morey is "generally a good kid" who was passionate about teaching karate. He added that Morey feels "mortified" and "ashamed" about what he did.
"Somehow his boundaries became clouded and blurred and he definitely regrets it," Durkin said. "He has lost a lot, something that he loved very much, his identity and in many respects his life. ... He is a felon at 21."
He warned parents to talk to their children about the consequences of sending sexually explicit messages electronically.
Morey is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 30.

A 21-year-old karate instructor in Blaine is accused of sending sexually explicit messages to one of his 12-year-old students.
Ali Islam Morey was charged Monday with one count of engaging in electronic communication relating to sexual conduct with a child, according to the criminal complaint filed against him in Anoka County District Court.
Morey could not be reached for comment Monday.
Court documents allege that Morey sent sexually charged messages to the female student on Facebook over two days in January. He also sent her a picture of his genitalia and asked her to describe how she wanted to interact with him sexually, the complaint says.
He allegedly went on to request that she keep their conversation a secret.
Morey is a karate instructor at Professional Karate Studios in Blaine and has been for several years, according to Bill Miller, the owner and master instructor at the studio.
Miller said Morey started taking lessons at the studio when he was 8 and eventually became an instructor.
This is the first time a student has lodged a complaint against one of the studio's instructors, Miller said.
He added that none of the alleged misconduct took place at the karate school.
Parents of students who attend the program have been notified of the allegations, Miller said.
"They have a lot of faith in the karate school but of course they were terribly disappointed and hurt by this situation, as was I," Miller said.
"You put your faith and trust in someone who has been with you since they were 8 and then there is this. ... It caught me by complete and total surprise," he said.
