Waukesha — A former Brookfield martial arts instructor was sentenced Thursday in Waukesha County Circuit Court to 11 years in prison for molesting two 13-year-old boys, one of whom was a martial arts student.
Arleigh C. Smith, 24, pleaded no contest and was convicted of three counts of second-degree sexual assault, two of which stemmed from a Milwaukee County case.
Circuit Judge Robert G. Mawdsley said he considered the seriousness of the offenses and the impact on the victims and their families.
"The mentor turned into the person who did the harm," Mawdsley said.
Smith was charged in Waukesha County after a boy's mother discovered a sexually explicit instant message on the family's computer and called police, according to a criminal complaint.
The Brookfield boy told police that he had sexual contact with Smith, including at the martial arts school where he was a student.
Smith's Milwaukee home was searched in August, and police seized a computer, court records say, leading to the charges in Milwaukee County. Three videos found on Smith's hard drive showed him assaulting another boy.
Assistant District Attorney Lloyd Carter said the Brookfield parents are guilt-ridden because they encouraged their son to learn martial arts and to listen to Smith.
Smith apologized to both victims and their families.
"I would give my life to erase their memories," Smith said Thursday.
Smith also apologized to Chan Lee, owner of JK Lee Black Belt Academy, 2645 W. Lisbon Road.
"I let him down, big time," Smith said.

Child Sex Assault Charges In Brookfield
By George Mallet
BROOKFIELD - A former Brookfield martial arts instructor is in custody, charged with five counts of sexual assault of a child. Arleigh Smith, 23, allegedly had sexual contact with a 13-year-old male student at the martial arts studio where he taught until being fired for an unrelated matter earlier this month.
“Wow,” Nora Avila said as she got the news on her front porch a few doors away from the tidy south side home Smith shares with his parents. “I just can’t see it. I mean, I’m just so surprised.”
As Avila spoke, a smile of disbelief played on the young mother’s face. Then she blurted out something more. “He has spent the night over here with my children. I mean, he was even helping them out, giving them pointers because he is an instructor,"
Avila said. If Smith’s neighbor was shocked, his former employer was stung. Chan Lee spoke of mentoring the young Tae Kwon Do instructor and having him over to his own home. “My father came to this country in 1975 and he opened this school to help people be their best through the martial arts,” Lee said as he sat in the downtown office of Zeppos and Associates public relations firm. “To have one person ruin all of that is very difficult.”
Lee was visibly shaken by what he sees as a sacred bond broken. “I absolutely feel betrayed, hurt. I’m angry. I’m upset,” Lee said, his voice seemingly trembling with anger. Arleigh Smith is in the Waukesha County Jail. He is slated to make a preliminary courtroom appearance on August 29.
