A former New York City police officer and West Milford martial arts instructor who plead guilty to bringing teenage girls across state lines to have sex now faces sentencing April 29.
Trent Young’s defense attorney Amy Attias requested a six-month adjournment in September because Young was being treated for advanced-stage cancer, she wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas.
Young, a police officer for nine years and a popular martial arts teacher, pleaded guilty in July 2009 to three counts of transporting a minor with the intent to engage in sexual activity. Two of the girls were his students and one was from Brooklyn, the neighborhood where he was raised.
He brought them to his West Milford studio and to a studio in his Middletown, N.Y., home. The girls were 14, 15 and 16 years old.
This week, Karas set Young's sentencing for 2 p.m. April 29 in the White Plains, N.Y., federal courthouse. He faces a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of 30 years plus two life sentences for the three counts combined.
The sentencing had been postponed several times already, even before health issues were raised. Attias had requested adjournments so Young could undergo psychological testing, which she said would create “a complete picture” of a man who was abused as a child.

Passaic martial arts instructor allegedly took sex assault victims across state lines

An instructor at a Passaic County martial arts school faces federal charges alleging he drove two of his students across state lines to sexually assault them.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York today charged Trent Young, 39, who taught at Iron Tiger Martial Arts Center in West Milford. Young, a New York City police officer, was arrested less than two weeks ago on New York state charges of sexually assaulting one of the girls.
Since that arrest, the second girl came forward and her allegations are included in the new charges, according to Michael Garcia, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
According to the complaint, Young's abuse of the first victim started when she became a green belt in 2005. Garcia said Young required that she sign a document pledging her obedience to him and then tested that obedience by directing her to take her clothes off.
Young engaged in sexual activity with the girl, who was 14 at the time, on a number of occasions at Iron Tiger; in his Middletown, N.Y., home, where he also taught; and at a hotel near his home between August 2006 and October 2007, Garcia said. He forced her several times to take a home pregnancy test, the U.S. attorney said.
The second alleged victim, who also was 14 at the time, claimed Young had sex with her in his home office in March 2005 and at the Iron Tiger studio in the summer of 2006, the complaint said.
A third girl, who was 15 at the time, told investigators Young directed her to take off her clothes at his home last spring but she refused.
