OGDEN — A former martial arts instructor who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to prison.
Adam Butcher, 37, appeared in the 2nd District Court of Ogden Monday, Sept. 21, with his attorney, Camille Nieder. Butcher pleaded guilty in July to attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Judge Joseph Bean sentenced Butcher to a 3 years to life in prison. Butcher was out on bail pending sentencing, but was taken into custody after the hearing. He was also ordered to pay for any counseling for the victim.
Butcher was arrested in June 2014, after the victim’s mother came forward to police about the abuse, according to court records.
The victim then told detectives that Butcher touched her private area on multiple occasions, including once with a sex object. The reported abuse was not related to Butcher’s martial arts business.
Butcher was the head instructor at a martial arts studio in Eden called Evolution Martial Arts. He was also a local Mixed Martial Arts fighter with a 2-0 record.
Butcher and his business are not related to the studio Evolutionary Martial Arts in Syracuse.

OGDEN — Adam Butcher, head instructor at an Eden mixed martial arts studio, is charged with inappropriately touching a 13-year-old girl and may face up to a lifetime in prison if convicted of the charge.
Butcher, 36, is accused of first-degree felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child for allegedly touching the girl in her private area on multiple occasions, including once with a sex object. He was arrested June 19, shortly after the girl was interviewed by investigators with the Ogden Police Department.
Court records indicate Butcher is currently out of police custody on bail. He made his initial court appearance July 3 at 2nd District Court in Ogden. Butcher's next court date is set for Sept. 18, when he and his defense will finalize their decision about whether to proceed to trial or enter a plea that would send him directly to sentencing.
Butcher has been teaching mixed martial arts for more than 15 years, according to an online instructor bio, and has overseen all instruction at Evolution Martial Arts, located at 4786 E. 2600 North in Eden.
"The goal of our program is to promote physical and spiritual well being and help cultivate characteristics that can be applied to everyday life as well as produce well rounded, effective martial artists," Butcher's bio reads.
It wasn't immediately clear whether he is continuing as an instructor while his case is pending.
Butcher is also listed as an MMA fighter locally, posting a 2-0 record consisting of a fight each in Ogden and Salt Lake City. Butcher's last official fight took place in June 2012.
