YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- A former Yakima martial arts teacher is headed to prison for having sex with an underage student. Cristiano Oliveira was sentenced to almost three years in prison Tuesday. During the hearing, his victim addressed the court on how his actions had affected her.
"This is not some twisted teen-love affair gone wrong," Oliveira's victim said. "This is a story of abuse, manipulation and deceit. This is my story."
Oliveira's victim shared her story in court, as Oliveira was sentenced for child rape.
"I close my eyes at night and I'm forced to relive moments of my past that no child should ever have to be forced to live in the first place," she said.
Detectives say Oliveira, a former martial arts instructor, had sex with the young girl about 100 times.
"The teen years were supposed to be spent enjoying life [and] discovering yourself, but that part of my life was stolen away when I was just thirteen," said the victim.
Oliveira owned and taught jiu-jitsu at a studio in Yakima.
"We trust you to teach them, but as long as they're with you, they're in your care that we have trusted you with," said Yakima Superior Court Hon. Ruth Reukaf. "You violated that in every sense of the word."
Judge Reukaf sentenced Oliveira to the top of the range for the crime: 34 months in prison. Oliveira's attorney argued he had already faced punishment by losing his business and likely getting deported when he's out of prison. He told the court Oliveira had a positive impact on the community.
"A caring individual," Oliveira's defense attorney Case said. "A coach who brought confidence to young children."
However, the judge disagreed.
"You took a child, you took away her innocence, you took away her choices and you have given her a life sentence," Hon. Reukaf said.
A life sentence this victim is choosing to use positively.
"I found my voice and I'm speaking for all children that have had their innocence stolen from them," Oliveira's victim said.
It's a rare move the detective on the case is proud of.
"It's a good feeling to know that she's able to move forward," YPD detective Chad Janis said. "In a lot of cases, they're just not able to stand up and face their abuser."
Oliveira entered an Alford plea on third degree child rape in May. This allowed the 36-year-old to maintain his innocence, while admitting prosecutors had a strong case against him.

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A martial arts instructor is accused of raping a student. His studio is closed and people who know him are stunned. The woman says the crimes began more than five years ago, but she just came forward a few days ago.
Police arrested 35-year-old Cristiano Oliveira. They say the jiu-jitsu instructor raped a 14-year-old student more than 100 times. No 14-year-old can legally consent to sex. Oliveira is now facing sex crime charges.
"This situation was a complete shock," said Jerad Deal.
Jerad is the volunteer general manager of Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He knows both the alleged victim and the accused.
Jerad says he helped at the studio on 72nd Avenue at the time the alleged sexual assaults would have happened: back in 2008 to 2010.
"I never, ever thought that this could happen," said Jerad. “I was around them the whole time and never suspected anything."
The alleged victim was 14 at the time. She's now 20.
"She was 14 years old, and, to deal with something like that at 14 years old - put yourself in her shoes, are you going to say anything?" said Jerad.
Court papers say Cristiano Oliveira admitted to the assaults when interviewed by police.
"It's kind of hard because you wish you would have known, and maybe you wish you would have saw some signs, but I never saw it," said Jerad.
Now, closed signs are hung on Gracie Barra's doors. It is unclear if it will reopen.
Oliveira made his first appearance in court Thursday. Bail was set at $1 million. If he is able to get out of jail before his trial, he is not allowed to contact the alleged victim.
"I would really like to think that it didn't happen," said Jerad.
A shock for all connected to the martial arts studio.
In the police report, the Gracie Barra facility was not listed as one of the locations of the alleged child rape. The report said there are additional charges against Oliveira under investigation.
