SANTA CRUZ >> A 28-year-old Watsonville taekwondo studio owner and instructor convicted in January for raping and molesting three students, and having child pornography and methamphetamines, started his nearly 18-year sentence at San Quentin State Prison this month.
Nemesio Alfaro-Estrada owned and taught martial arts at N & H Tae Kwon Do studio in Watsonville, the Sentinel reported. He was convicted of eight felonies: two counts for committing a felony while released on bail, having unlawful intercourse, copulating with a child younger than 16 years old, committing lewd acts with a child at least 10 years old, penetrating a child with an object, preventing or dissuading a witness and giving a minor marijuana, according to court documents.
His plea reduces the original 25 felonies he faced linked with crimes from 2012 to 2017, according to court documents.
Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Timothy Volkmann sentenced Alfaro-Estrada on Jan. 22 to 17 years, eight months imprisonment.
Alfaro-Estrada was arrested in January 2017, but he was released on bail and continued to offend, according to court documents. His prison sentence stems from crimes committed while Alfaro-Estrada was out on bail in 2017.
That year, the studio’s Facebook page — at Facebook.com/nhtkd/ — had posts showing Alfaro-Estrada coaching children and celebrating their accomplishments. The studio is in the 1400 block of Freedom Boulevard. The studio posted in March about its appreciation he had returned.
An amended complaint filed in October 2017 accused Alfaro-Estrada of sending sexually explicit material to a girl with intent to seduce her from October 2012 to October 2014, and raping, orally copulating and molesting her in other ways from February to October 2016 in Corralitos, East Lake Avenue in Watsonville and the taekwondo studio.
He gave marijuana to the same girl, according to the complaint. On Aug. 4, 2016, Alfaro-Estrada, who was motivated by an “unnatural and abnormal sexual interest in children,” met with the girl to commit lewd acts exposing her genitals, according to the complaint. He also threatened the girl.
Alfaro-Estrada in early September 2017 molested and orally copulated a second girl, who was 14 years old, according to the complaint. He also exposed her to pornography and had her pose for some form of recording, either photos, film or electronically generated images, according to the complaint.
The incidents are not explained clearly in charging documents, but descriptions of specific crimes are listed as “lingerie incident,” “socks video incident,” and “underwear video incident.” The 14-year-old child also was orally copulated and molested in other encounters from April to September 2017, according to the complaint.
Alfaro-Estrada also had child pornography and methamphetamines, according to the complaint.
Volkmann issued a protective order on Jan. 22, prohibiting Alfaro-Estrada from having any communication or contact with three girls ages 13, 15 and 16 and a 19-year-old woman. The order expires Jan. 22, 2027. Alfaro-Estrada must register as a sex offender and a drug offender with the chief of police in any city of residence upon release from prison.
