A Clackamas martial arts teacher was sentenced Monday to 13 months in prison for attempting to have sex with a 13-year-old student.
William Brent Mullens, 37, also was placed on three years post-prison supervision and must register as a sex offender.
The Milwaukie man was convicted of two counts of first-degree attempted sexual abuse for groping the boy, who trained at Northwest Martial Arts on Southeast Sunnyside Road.
The boy, now 14, told Clackamas County Circuit Judge Ronald D. Thom that, as a result of the abuse, he is struggling in school, doesn't trust most adults and has lost friends from the martial arts center.
Mullens apologized for doing "anything to cause you to discomfort or feel uncomfortable."
Prosecutor Michael Wu said the boy admired and trusted Mullens and that Mullens used the long-standing teacher-student relationship to take advantage of the child.
