Fort Bluff founder booked: Former director Mike Crain turns himself in to sheriff's department

The founder and former executive director of a Rhea County Christian camp has been arrested and charged with three counts of sexual battery.
Mike Crain, 65, turned himself in to officers at the Rhea County Jail Friday after a grand jury issued an indictment for him on Oct. 5 for the felony charges.
Crain has garnered much recognition over the last 35 years for the creation of Dayton-based Fort Bluff Camp and the National Association of Christian Athletics as well as for his "Karate for Christ" martial arts demonstrations.
According to Rhea County Investigator Rocky Potter, two women have alleged that Crain groped them in the office facilities of Fort Bluff earlier this year. Both were employees at the camp, Potter said.
One of the alleged victims is a minor. The teen reported that Crain molested her while they were alone on two occasions this year - once in May and another time in August, according to police reports.
The other alleged victim told police she was sexually assaulted in August as well, Potter said.
Both women claimed that they were alone with Crain when the incidents occurred, according to police reports. In one case, the alleged victim was asleep and reportedly awoke to Crain assaulting her.
Potter said campers were probably on the campgrounds during at least one of the reported incidents.
Crain was released from jail after he paid a $5,000 bond.
In 1974, Crain and his wife, Naomi, founded Fort Bluff on Ogden Road, located atop Dayton Mountain.
According to Herald-News archives, the camp is host to about 10,000 children every year through its various camp programs and athletic events through the NACA.
According to a statement released by the organization, Crain had to step down from his leadership positions with Fort Bluff after suffering strokes in 2007. His wife Naomi was named as President and CEO in April 2008, the statement said. The camp's statement said that Mike Crain suffered from "progressive cognitive dementia."
Mike Crain still worked and lived on the campgrounds, though, according to Potter.
Days after the alleged incidents occurred in August, Naomi Crain left her positions with the camp, and Tim Walterbach was named Executive Director of Fort Bluff Camp.
According to Walterbach, the Crains have not been officially affiliated with Fort Bluff or the NACA since then. The released statement indicated the separation was a result of Crain's medical problems.
"Mike and Naomi Crain are no longer affiliated with NACA/Fort Bluff Camp," the statement said. "There was a mutual agreement for their separation. Mike's illness prohibits his and Naomi's involvement in the ministry of NACA/Fort Bluff Camp."
"We're saddened by the situation," Walterbach said on Monday.
The camp had no other comments to add to the released statement.

Crain sentenced to jail, probation

Famed Fort Bluff Bluff founder Mike Crain is doing time in the Rhea County Jail following his Thursday afternoon sentencing hearing.
Circuit Court Judge Thomas "Rusty" Graham sentenced Crain to 90 days in jail and a year-and-a-half of probation following his release for his sexual battery conviction earlier this year.
Crain also pleaded no contest to one other count of sexual battery in a related case, and an additional charge was dropped.
Crain also must register with the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry.
In August Crain was convicted of the sexual battery charge after a jury heard the testimony of the victim, who was an employee of the camp. She said Crain groped her buttocks one morning in 2009 in the Fort Bluff offices. Several other former employees recounted similar stories of Crain groping them in Fort Bluff offices during the trial as well.
The charge Crain pleaded to Thursday involved a teenager who claimed she was napping on a couch in the Fort Bluff office and awoke to Crain putting his hand up her shorts.
For that count, Crain was given two more years of probation, to be served after the first stint.
Crain's attorney, R. Dee Hobbs, argued that because of strokes his client has suffered in recent years, his age and the fact that he had no prior history, he should not have been incarcerated.
"This crime was committed under unusual circumstances," he told the judge. "He has in fact endeavored to do good to people throughout his life. He's not at risk to re-offend."
Judge Graham said the fact that Crain was an authority figure over the employees and that several women reported being groped requires that Crain do jail time.
"I just want to be clear this is on the record," Graham said. "It's not just one isolated incident. It may be several.
"The victims were extremely upset," he said. "They suffered a lot."
Graham also said Crain didn't appear to be remorseful of the crime.
"There is some lack of him being sorry for what happened," he added.
For the conviction, Crain was looking at two years in jail at most, though several people involved in the case expected him to receive probation and be placed on the sex offender registry.
Crain will have to transfer his probation and registry status to South Carolina, where he and his wife, Naomi, plan to move after his incarceration, Hobbs said in court.
Crain will also have to pay a $1,500 fine and perform 100 hours of community service. With good behavior, Crain could be released in 67 days.
Assistant District Attorney Will Dunn said he's glad the case is finished.
"It's been a long struggle," he said Thursday. "Hopefully it's over today. The victims feel like they were vindicated."
Hobbs and Mike and Naomi Crain declined to comment after the hearing.
