LAFAYETTE, Ind.
A Lafayette martial arts instructor and auto worker faces three child molest charges.
Neighbors are shocked, but say James Ly Tran is innocent until proven otherwise.
"I tend to just not make any judgments, because I don't know and I just heard the very general information," said neighbor Melanie Hahn-Greene.
Tran is charged with three counts of child molest for alleged crimes against children under 14. The Tippecanoe County sheriff reportedly moved to arrest Tran early to keep him from fleeing.
"I don't know them. Well, they've always been very nice. I don't have any issues with them," Hahn-Greene said. "But I definitely, if it were found to be true, I obviously would be very concerned at this point. I'm just not sure what to think."
Neighbors are waiting to learn who the karate instructor allegedly victimized.
"It's not good to hear in your neighborhood, especially down the street from you," said neighbor Michael Hamm. "I'll be bringing it up with my family, yeah. Have two grandkids come over all the time. Don't know what he was involved with, but definitely disturbing."
"We don't know what might happen in the neighborhood and parents just need to be aware of those kinds of things can happen anywhere," said Hahn-Greene.
In fact, Tran's neighborhood is just launching a neighborhood crime watch.
"Been working on it for several months now," said Tim Greene.
He says sexual predators is one of the things the group would track.
"We tend to watch things very closely. I was part of the original Eyes On Lafayette movement that started out here due to child predators," Greene said.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a Lafayette man to 64 years in prison for 10 convictions of child molesting against three victims dating back to 2009.
Tippecanoe Circuit Judge Thomas Busch sentenced 52-year-old James Ly Tran on Monday. A jury convicted Tran of the 10 counts in March after a three-day trial.
The Lafayette Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/2qp83uT ) the allegation against Tran came to light when one of the victims told police last June that he had molested her. That led to discovery of the other two victims.
Police arrested Tran last June after discovering he had withdrawn money from his 401(k) account in possible preparation of leaving the Lafayette area.

Child molester gets 64-year prison sentence
Ron Wilkins, Journal & Courier Published 3:58 p.m. ET May 16, 2017
LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Fifty-two-year-old child molester James Ly Tran is not likely to get out of prison alive.
Tippecanoe Circuit Judge Thomas Busch sentenced Tran to 64 years in prison on Monday for 10 convictions of child molesting against three victims and dating back as far as 2009.
Tran's years of molesting became public when one of his victims informed police on June 12, 2016, that he had molested her. She also provided police with information of how Tran molested her while molesting another child. This led to interviewing a third child who told police she also was molested by Tran.
Police arrested Tran last June at his south side home after discovering he had withdrawn money form his 401(k) account and might be preparing to leave the area, police said last year.
A jury convicted Tran of 10 counts of child molesting in March after a three-day trial.
