ATTLEBORO — A former part-time karate instructor at the Attleboro YMCA faces sentencing in May for having sex with an underage student last year.
Corey J. Ruel, 41, formerly of North Attleboro, was scheduled to be sentenced May 15 by Judge Raffi Yessayan in Fall River Superior Court.
Ruel, the married father of two children, was arrested July 25 by North Attleboro police. He admitted to having sex over an eight-month period with 13-year-old girl at the Attleboro YMCA, where he was a part-time instructor.
Ruel admitted to engaging in sex with the girl at his home and at a racquetball court at the YMCA.
Ruel, who has no prior criminal record, has been free on $30,000 bail with a GPS bracelet and went to live with his mother in Wareham.
He and his wife are now in the process of getting a divorce, according to court records.
Ruel pleaded guilty March 7 to three counts of statutory rape, which was reduced from aggravated statutory rape of a child 10 years younger than him.
Aggravated statutory rape carries a 10-year minimum mandatory sentence.
But his guilty plea means Ruel will not face the mandatory penalty and the victim will not have to testify at a trial.
His lawyer, Paul Carlucci of Franklin, said he and prosecutors have agreed on a sentence to recommend to the judge but said he could not comment on the details.
Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, also declined to disclose the sentencing recommendation.
The judge can accept the recommendation or reject it and issue his own.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — A man described by authorities as a karate instructor at the Attleboro YMCA has been charged with child rape for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The Sun Chronicle reports that Corey Ruel, of North Attleborough, was held on $50,000 bail after not guilty pleas to five counts of aggravated statutory rape of a child were entered on his behalf.
Prosecutors say the 40-year-old married father of three met the girl at the Y several months ago and had sex with her on multiple occasions.
Police and Ruel’s lawyer say he was a karate instructor at the YMCA, but the Y’s CEO says Ruel was a member but an instructor.
Ruel’s attorney argued for lower bail, saying his client was not a flight risk.
