Jury Convicted Man Of Sexual Battery On 14-Year-Old
UPDATED 5:52 AM EDT Apr 20, 2012
ORLANDO, Fla. -
A former martial arts teacher and police officer convicted of sexual battery on a 14-year-old was sentenced Friday.
John Durinick, 41, received a 10-year prison sentence plus five years of probation. He will also be considered a sexual offender.
Before the sentence was read, the court heard from the victim and Durinick's wife.
"He took so much away from me that I can't get back," said the victim. "And now because of what mistakes John Durinick has done with his life, I have to live with mine the rest of my life."
Durinick's wife, Cathy Durinick, had a different plea to the court.
"His freedom was stolen by three girls who did not have the dignity to tell the truth or the humanity," said Cathy Durinick.
John Durinick taught martial arts at an academy in St. Cloud that is now closed.
John Durinick still faces trial in two other cases involving two other teen girls. He is charged with 96 counts of lewd molestation and battery on minors.

KISSIMMEE --John Durinick, who was recently convicted of sexual battery, will attempt to get out of jail next week before facing two more trials charges of sexually abusing young female students at a martial arts schools in Kissimmee and St. Cloud, records show.
A jury convicted Durinick in his first trial Feb. 24 on charges of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious battery, court records show.
The cases began in April 2010 when two 15-year-old students told St. Cloud police that they had been repeatedly molested by Durinick, then 39, at a martial arts school where he worked as one of about a dozen instructors.
He was charged with 45 counts of lewd or lascivious molestation and one count of false imprisonment, records show.
John Emmons, the owner of John Emmons' Taekwondo Academy, testified last week that he fired Durinick as soon as he learned of the allegations. Durinick held black-belt rank in a different martial art before earning a black belt in taekwondo, Emmons said.
A third student subsequently told the Osceola County Sheriff's Office that Durinick had raped her two years earlier when she was 14 years old, records show.
The Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office intends to seek a 15-year sentence for last week's conviction and opposes Durinick's release on bail, according to spokeswoman Danielle Tavernier. Durinick remains held in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
The bond hearing is set for Thursday in front of Circuit Judge Margaret Waller. [email protected] or 407-420-5257.
