A former Salem karate instructor pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of aggravated sexual battery and was sentenced to five years of probation, according to court records.
Craig William Manges Jr. will also have eight years of suspended prison time hanging over his head for inappropriately touching two young girls he had instructed. Police have said they received a complaint in 2011 and during their investigation discovered a similar complaint from 2005, when Manges was 17 years old.
Manges has spent the past nine months in jail.
Salem Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Bowers said the victims’ families agreed the sentence fit the crime.
“This was a sexual battery that became a felony because of the age of the children,” Bowers said. “It was not as aggravated a sexual battery as many as we see.”
