Voyeur serving 15-month sentence

GUILFORD — Having pleaded guilty to four felony counts of voyeurism with malice in November, the former owner of a martial arts studio is now behind bars and will have to register as a sex offender. Joseph Moscatelli, 43, was sentenced Friday to an eight-year jail sentence suspended after 15 months and five years of probation for allegedly filming staff and clients last June as they undressed in his Guilford martial arts studio. A fifth charge of risk of injury to a child was not pursued.
When he is released from jail, Moscatelli will be required to register as a sex offender and can never hold a job that would require contact with minors, such as coaching or teaching, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Jack Doyle. Though the crime is not one that automatically requires registration as a sex offender, the court found that Moscatelli committed it for sexual purposes, Doyle said.
“He caught himself on his own video. He’d turn the camera on, and you could see him looking in and then walking away, and you’d see him coming back into the room and grabbing the camera. Most time, it caught his face on there ... so he really made our case for us,” he added.
Moscatelli will also be required to undergo a sex offender evaluation and treatment and be supervised by the sex offender unit of the Office of Adult Probation when he’s released from jail.
Though Moscatelli owned two studios, the United Studios of Self Defense martial arts academy at 631 Boston Post Road and a second studio of the same name at 66 North Main St. in Branford, charges stem only from allegations surrounding the Guilford location.
Moscatelli was charged with two counts of voyeurism with malice and one count of risk of injury to a minor from his May 28 arrest, which occurred after an employee allegedly found equipment, including a camera and computer, set up in a back room of the studio.
Investigators said they reviewed the recordings and found images of one female employee and two girls, aged 16 and 11, in a state of undress.
Authorities again seized the equipment to assess additional recordings and arrested Moscatelli for a second time June 5, charging him with two more counts of voyeurism with malice. Continued...
