PARKER, Colo. – A former Parker martial arts instructor was sentenced this week to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two students at the Otomi Martial Arts studio.
Jose Hilario Soto, 21, pleaded guilty in October to one count of attempted sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of sexual exploitation of a child in exchange for other counts being dropped.
He was sentenced Monday to three years in prison to be followed by two years of parole. Soto will also have to register as a sex offender and serve 10 years of sex offender intensive supervised probation, the district attorney’s office said.
The two students reported the assault in May 2017 and the studio’s owner worked with law enforcement to investigate Soto.
“The defendant robbed the victims of a sense of security – he took that safe place away from them. These little girls were absolutely fearless in being able to tell someone what had happened to them,” said 18th Judicial Deputy District Attorney Valerie Brewer at Soto’s sentencing.
The parents of the victims also testified at Soto’s sentencing. One father said Soto needed a “tangible consequence” for his crimes.
“The world is full of thugs and miscreants and deviants, but those who abuse children who are defenseless and innocent … I’ll never figure that out,” the father said.
“You are raising some pretty amazing young ladies,” Judge Theresa Slade told the families. “They are brave, and they continue to show bravery and compassion.”

“The world is full of thugs and miscreants and deviants, but those who abuse children who are defenseless and innocent … I’ll never figure that out,” a father said.
He also said that Soto “needs a tangible consequence.”
“These are some of the most challenging cases we handle,” said District Attorney George Brauchler in a statement. “We rightfully want to lock up for as long as possible those who satisfy their lascivious sexual desires at the expense of the innocence of the youngest and most vulnerable in our community. And yet, we must balance that interest against the equally compelling wishes of parents who seek to limit the trauma to their children — not only of the crime itself — but also from having be to talk about it and be cross examined about it in front of 12 strangers. For these cases, justice is complicated and not always obvious.”
Soto pleaded guilty in October to one count of attempted sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count sexual exploitation of a child. Other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
The judge sentenced him to three years in the Department of Corrections, followed by 24 months of parole. Ten years of sex offender intensive supervised probation will run concurrent to parole and Soto must register as a sex offender.

Children report sexual assault by employee at kids’ martial arts studio

PARKER, Colo. -- Two minor children said they were touched inappropriately by a former employee at Otomi Martial Arts in Parker. The suspect was arrested Thursday.
Parker Detectives arrested 20-year-old Jose Hilario Soto at his Denver home on multiple charges including Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust, Enticement of a Child, False Imprisonment and Assault in the Third Degree.
Detectives learned that Soto occasionally volunteered at Otomi in Parker between March and May 2017, before becoming a paid employee at the studio on May 22.
Soto also occasionally volunteered at Otomi in Aurora over the last three years. The incidents took place at the studio in Parker and the victims were enrolled in classes at the studio at the time.
The owner of the martial arts studio, Ranulfo Gonzalez, said it’s a tough time right now for his studio and the families involved.
“It's shocking and other than that, I'm at a loss for words. I wish I had more to say but I'm just at a loss for words,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is now working with police and families involved on this case.
“At the moment we are just trying to make sure we do the best we can right now for the families that are involved, making sure our members are taken care of so this never happens again,” said Gonzalez.
Soto would not come to the door, but his dad spoke with FOX31 about the allegations. His dad said it’s a misunderstanding.
“That is not right. He don’t do nothing so they don’t understand the interpretation, what he pretend to say. But he is coaching and that’s all about it. I mean, he has a physical touch with all the kids and everything so that’s probably what happened,” said Soto’s father.
The owners of Otomi Martial Arts have been cooperative with the investigation and Soto is no longer employed by the studio.
Soto was arrested by Parker Police and booked into the Douglas County Jail.
Parker Police continue to investigate this incident and will recommend the filing of charges. Authorities aren't certain these children are the only victims and urge anyone with information to contact local police.
