WINSTON-SALEM (MCT) — A sex offender was sentenced to probation Tuesday for running a karate studio at which he taught children.
Phillip James Every, 58, was sentenced in Forsyth Superior Court to four years of probation after he pleaded guilty to violating the state's sex-offender registry laws by working at business where he was responsible for coaching minors.
Every had owned and run Karate USA on Stratford Road for more than 30 years.
Prosecutor Jennifer Martin said Every stopped working there after he was convicted in 2001 of indecent liberties with a child and assault on a female. But Every returned to teaching karate after he finished probation.
That wasn't a crime at the time, but in 2006, the state's laws changed to ban sex offenders from coaching or supervising children. Martin said the State Bureau of Investigation sent letters to all sex offenders notifying them of the change, but Every kept teaching karate.
Every recalled getting a letter but did not remember reading about the change in the law, said his attorney, Marilyn Massey.
A parent found Every on the sex-offender registry last year and called the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, which sent an undercover deputy to verify that Every was working there and teaching the classes.
Every's 2001 convictions were for talking lewdly on the phone with a student from the karate studio while masturbating and for rubbing a student's buttocks in the studio.
Massey asked for probation, and Judge Henry E. Frye Jr. agreed after finding no other recent allegations of wrongdoing against Every beyond the violation of the registration law.
Every's plea was part of a deal with prosecutors, who agreed to a sentence in the lower range of possible sentences. He has six months of intensive probation with a curfew of 6 p.m.
Every declined to comment after the hearing. He has since closed Karate USA.
