A former self-defense instructor from Tobyhanna was sentenced Tuesday to 20 to 40 years in state prison after pleading guilty to raping a then-12-year-old female student last year.
Stephen Rementer
Stephen Rementer, 28, who at the time taught at Pocono Crimson Dragon Martial Arts Academy in Pocono Summit, had pleaded guilty to raping a child.
"He met the victim when she was 8 and gained the trust of her and her family," Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Michael Rakaczewski said after sentencing. "He groomed her over time for his purposes and then victimized her when she was 12."
Rementer addressed the court at sentencing, apologizing to the victim and her family and expressing "extreme sorrow at the disruption" he had caused in her life, county Public Defender Wieslaw Niemoczynski said.
This was Rementer's first documented criminal offense, according to court records.
The state Sexual Offender Assessment Board, which evaluates convicted offenders to help judges determine what punishments to impose, found Rementer is not a sexually violent predator, Niemoczynski said.
Had he been deemed such, he likely would have faced an even more severe punishment.
Still, "the maximum sentence imposed in this case seems inappropriate under the circumstances," Niemoczynski said.
Police said the victim's mother came home to find Rementer and the victim having sex in bed last December.
The victim was taken to the Child Advocacy Center in Scranton, where she reported she and Rementer had had sex about four times, including that day, according to court papers.
Police contacted Rementer, who came to the station and admitted during an interview that he had sex with the victim about six times, beginning in late August 2011.
He told police he knew she was only 12 at the time and that he and the victim swapped lewd pictures of each other, according to court papers.
"I'm glad he got what he did," said Pocono Crimson Dragon owner and head instructor Anthony Gilbert, who had worked with Rementer. "We came together with the victim, her family and others at our school and in the community to heal after what happened. We didn't let his actions break our stride in serving our community."
