Martial arts teacher denies abuse charges

Falmouth man faces allegations he tried to touch a student inappropriately. FALMOUTH - A martial arts instructor accused of molesting and intimidating a former teenage student entered a plea of not guilty in Falmouth District Court yesterday.
Theodore Dickerson, 30, was arraigned on charges of indecent assault and battery that allegedly occurred with a 14-year-old male Kung Fu student three years ago.
Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Sean Murphy alleged that four or five times in the late summer and early fall of 1998, Dickerson inappropriately touched the boy, who is now 17.
After the teen resisted, Murphy alleged, Dickerson used "mental coercion" and intimidation to get him to keep quiet.
Dickerson, then an instructor and co-owner of the Kung Fu Training Center in Falmouth, once shared a hotel room with the boy while they attended a tournament in Maine. The boy alleges he awoke to find Dickerson inappropriately touching him.
Murphy also charged Dickerson made similar attempts to touch the boy's genitals when driving the boy home after class.
"My client vehemently denies all of these charges," said Jack Sullivan, who represents Dickerson.
Sullivan said Dickerson is the victim of "business competitors and rivals. There is a question of motivation here."
Dickerson left the Falmouth school after financial difficulties there last fall, said Eric Cruz, head instructor for the Glen Hart U.S.A. Kung Fu System on Cape Cod, including the Falmouth school and schools in Mashpee, Sandwich and Hyannis.
The Falmouth school, on Worcester Court, now is operated by Michael DiMaggio.
Cruz said he had received complaints from parents and students that Dickerson was too aggressive and was intimidating students.
As a result of the molestation charges, Dickerson has lost the space where he teaches karate. He rents from the Glenn Broadley Traditional Kung Fu School in Bourne, Sullivan said.
Dickerson, a lifelong resident of the Cape and graduate of Falmouth High School, has been a Kung Fu instructor for 10 years.
He was accompanied in court yesterday by his mother and the mother of one of his students.
Tina LeBlanc of Falmouth said she does not believe the charges against Dickerson and will stand by him.
"He has been a tremendous influence on my son," LeBlanc said.
The alleged victim was also in court with several U.S.A. Kung Fu instructors and fellow students.
DiMaggio, who has known both the bo Dickerson for many years, said he is not worried about the reputation of Kung Fu on Cape Cod.
But he said, "I'm just sick over this whole thing."
Bail was set at $500 and a pretrial conference scheduled for Feb. 16.

New sex charge filed against Kung Fu teacher

Theodore Dickerson faces charges of indecent assault and rape of two former students.
FALMOUTH - A former martial arts instructor charged earlier this month with molesting a student is now facing charges that he raped a second student.
Theodore Dickerson, 30, of 2 Small St., Pocasset, appeared in Falmouth District Court on Tuesday in response to a warrant for his arrest on three counts each of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and rape of a child under 16.
If convicted he could be sentenced to life in prison, but was released yesterday on personal recognizance.
On Jan. 12, a 17-year-old former student accused Dickerson of molesting and intimidating him three years ago.
A former Kung Fu instructor and co-owner of the Kung Fu Training Center in Falmouth, Dickerson entered a not-guilty plea, but lost the teaching space he rented at the Glenn Broadley Traditional Kung Fu School in Bourne.
Last week, another alleged victim came forward and a warrant was issued for Dickerson, who pleaded not guilty to the rape charges as well.
Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Brian Glenny, who heads the child abuse unit, said the case is being reviewed for a possible grand jury.
"Rape of a child with force carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment. For that to be processed it has to go to Superior Court," said Glenny.
Assistant District Attorney Sean Murphy requested $1,000 bail. However, he said, "the judge released him on his personal recognizance based on the fact that he came in on his own."
Neither Murphy or Glenny could release any details about what led to the charges.
Attorney Jack Sullivan, who represented Dickerson at the Jan. 12 hearing, said the charges are being encouraged by a competing school and questioned the motivation of the alleged victims. The alleged crimes occurred years ago, he said.
"This is a 10-year-old charge, again brought forward by his business rival Eric Cruz, and we believe this is another false accusation," said Sullivan.
Eric Cruz, head instructor for the Glen Hart USA Kung Fu System on Cape Cod including schools in Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich and Hyannis, said both victims trained with Dickerson at another school before he began teaching at the Glen Hart Falmouth school. Dickerson left the Falmouth school in the wake of financial difficulties last fall.
Cruz denies there is a competing interest. He said the first victim came to him just before Christmas and told Cruz he was raped as a child by Dickerson. Cruz said he encouraged both victims to report the allegations to State Police.
