A Yuba City judo instructor was convicted Thursday in the sexual abuse of a preteen boy.
A Sutter County jury found David Gerald Leonard, 44, guilty of four counts of child molestation. Each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence. Sentencing is set for Aug. 7.
Deputy District Attorney Amanda Hopper said Leonard was taken to the Sutter County Jail afterward, but he was not listed in booking records as of Thursday afternoon.
The accusations stemmed from the alleged abuse of a boy between 2002 and 2004, starting when the boy was 11 years old.
During the three-week trial, prosecutors played back recordings of telephone calls between Leonard and the boy, made in 2006 when the boy was 15. The tapes capture the two discussing their past sex acts and Leonard's fear of arrest.
A police officer for a Sacramento County cybercrime task force also testified that he found 93 photographs of nude boys on a laptop computer he recovered from Leonard's home in 2006.
Leonard faces two more molestation counts in a separate case involving a 7-year-old boy in 2002. A pretrial conference for that case is scheduled next month.
Leonard formerly ran a judo studio in Yuba City and also directed a martial arts camp in Challenge, in the Yuba County foothills, according to Hopper.
