An Omaha man already serving 50 to 80 years in prison in Nebraska for sexually assaulting a child has also been found guilty in Pottawattamie County.

Fourth District Court Judge Kathleen Kilnoski found Stewart O. Newman, 41, guilty Friday of three counts of second-degree sexual abuse, three counts of indecent contact with a child and three counts of lascivious acts with a child during a bench trial.
Newman had the sexual contact with the girl when she was 8, 9, and 10 years old in 2008, 2009 and 2010, while on camping trips at Wilson Island. Both the victim and Newman lived in Omaha.
The girl testified the sexual abuse took place during camping trips in each of the years in November. On each occasion, Newman assaulted the girl in a tent.
Second-degree sexual assault is a Class B felony in Iowa and carries a mandatory 25-year prison sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 6.
In April, Douglas County District Judge Patrick Mullen sentenced Newman to 50 to 80 years in prison for first-degree sexual assault of a child.
The same girl victimized in Iowa testified that Newman sexually assaulted her several times in Nebraska, the last time when she was 10.
He also was convicted of six counts of manufacturing child pornography after police found several photos of the girl on Newman’s computer.
Newman and his wife had been associated with a youth ministry that operated out of, but was not affiliated with, King of Kings Lutheran Church. He and his wife have since divorced.
Assistant Pottawattamie County attorney Dan McGinn, who prosecuted the Iowa case with assistant county attorney Shelly Sedlak, praised the poise of the victim in the case.
“Our victim had to testify against this defendant twice, in Nebraska, and here,” he said. “Judge Kilnoski found (Newman) guilty on every single count. She believed the victim, so she believed it happened just like the victim said.”
McGinn said it is still unclear where Newman will serve his prison time first.
